I had that error just three days ago. It was on only for a day and went away on its own yesterday.

Thread revival! I just got this code this morning. Any ideas on the culprit? Any luck E60 545i Sport?
This may be what is called the smog pump. It pumps fresh air into a diverter that routes to the exhaust manifold when the engine is cold and to the catalytic converter when warm. The diverter is electrical and controlled by a relay. My guess is either the diverter or relay (if they do exist) are bad.

Try and locate a schematic diagram that shows you where to find everything and check it out. A bad diverter could eventualy lead to a clogged cat. G/L

secondary air pump has to deal with what is most commonly known as the smog pump. most commonly what happens is either the changeover valve gets clogged up with carbon and causes a fault or the vacuum hose that is attached to the changeover valves dries out and either cracks or breaks off. If it is saying there is a short, check the wiring to and at the pump. they are ususally mounted down low on the passenger side toward the front of the engine compartment.

Save yourself the guessing and take it to a dealer or BMW shop for diagnostic, as much as it sucks, pay the $100 fee but they will tell you exactly what needs to be replaced and you can decide whether you can DIY or have a shop fix it. OBD II scanner cannot interpret Mercedes and BMW codes so the code OBD II will throw out at you will be far from the problem. SO spend that $100 to save money later instead of randomly replacing MAF sensor, which K&N claims can not be damaged by the oil even if you soak the filter (check their site).

Have you checked that the gas cap is on tight? P1434 is the 'Diagnostic Module Tank Leakage.' It's usually caused by a loose gas cap.

Have you just try to clear it? I got this code once when my battery died. Took it over to my friends shop and he said it could be a sensor or a number of things, he told me to just clear it and see what happens. That was over 6 months ago and no check engine or code to this day. Possibly just a fluke, as you know with all the electronics on our cars. Give it a try and see what happens.

Good luck

I have had increased emissions/check engine lights on a week ago.My car is also 2005 545i with no warranty so it scared the shit out of me After a week it just dissapeared. It was the third time within the last year but this time the lights were lit longer then usually. So I would just wait maybe it just resolves itself. Good luck!

I have an 04 545i and my fault code was P-1434 as well. Took car to dealership last week due to increased emissions/p1434. They replaced DTML pump. Apparently it regulates the fuel pressure in the gas tank. Part # 16-13-7-193-479. Replaced under CPO warranty and luckily only had to pay $50 deductible.

Same code here-P1434. Took the car to the dealer before the ext. warranty expire. It's been a week since, SA told me their programming kept crashing and they ordered something to fix it. I'm enjoying the M Sport 335i loaner, much better than the last 335i that I got(BMW of SD).
