It wont damage anything, just poor driveability, consumption etc... Its best to get the code read from dealership. Use our sponsers to get 25% off the part... also check on ebay.
How to prevent it, what I did was wash the filter, face down, with luke warm water... get most of excess oil out, dry it with a cloth, let it dry for the day... Never had problems since, traps dirt etc fine, KN oils it toooo much.
If indeed it is the MAF, you can try to CLEAN the maf... read here on how to...

i got a service engine soon light today and i-drive said increased emissions, i went to autozone to have the obd read. guy told me the code is p1434 and looked it up on his computer and the code came up for a Volkswagen on his computer which was weird but the definition it gave was secondary air injection pump realy circuit short to positive anyone know what i need to replace to fix this? the car is out of warranty.

My OBDII scanner gave the same code for the same fault.

I would trust myself with an OBDII scanner anyday before trusting the kids who work at Autozone, Pep Boys, etc.
