Wildcat, unless you're a "regular" and therefore know the guys taking your vehicle. its really a craps shoot. Park it and take your chances. I am a citizen of the city with a park and lock---- my own space where I park my own, lock it up and leave it protected.
I wouldn't do it any other way and that is based on years of experience.
I was afraid that might be the answer I'd get. Oh, well. Maybe I can schedule my meetings to coincide a little better with the train schedule (and none downtown)! Yeah, and maybe I'll see an airborne porker on my way home from work tonight. :sigh:

We're going to get a meet going in NY when the weather warms up. We can't let VT, ECF and all the west coast peeps have all the fun. Maybe an outing at Captree State park is in order for the spring?

Doesn't the City clean up the goll-darned streets anymore after a storm? This place is absolutely disgusting! My vehicle will not emerge from its warm, dry location until the streets are operational again. Hope all of yours are safe and salt-free!
Its a little nasty but I don't think its that bad. I had to drive an hour out to NJ yesterday and I managed, with runflat summer tires no less.
Just have to wash the salt off car after the drive. Not a big deal.

Sure sounds good.
I've been on many runs during the past year with other car enthusiast groups, including the local M5board group. Bear Mountain is also a good spot.
FYI, only thing about Captree is, the gatherings on Sundays peak around 8-9am. Its tough for me to wake up early enough to make it LOL.

Hahaha! Same here...there was one 3 weeks ago at Captree and they met at 8am on Sunday. I like my sleep as well.

Jones Beach. It's at the eastern tip of Jones Beach. If you know that road, you'll know that straight-away which makes it VERY tempting to push your car more than double the speed limit.

Since I'm just a day-tripper and don't need a permanent garage, can any of you recommend some good garages on the East and West sides of Midtown, i.e. ones that seem to actually try to take care of the cars?

I think there's still a park and lock way west on 42nd Street - north side of street very close to West Side Highway. That way you're only at the mercy of people parking next to you. I've been parking BMWs in garages in NYC for 26 years and most of the dings in the cars were put there by parking garage attendants.

I would look for garages that have the lifts. I would ask the attendant to put your car up on one of the lifts, even if you have to pay more or it meant taking another car down to swap with yours. Make sure he won't be touching your car or pulling it down until you return and tip him well. This is what I did when I occassionally took my E39 into the city.
