Given the problems many of us are suffering with runflat tyres being unrepairable, has anyone investigated tyre insurance?

While searching for GAP insurance for my new E60 I came across a site offering 2 years AA tyre warranty for ?79. I rang AA to confirm how runflats would be covered and the adviser said that they would be replaced as they couldn't be repaired. On face value this doesn't seem too bad an offering given I have just had to replace a Goodyear NCT5 with 6000 mile on for ?181 as it picked up a nail on the edge.

Anybody got any thoughts?

1- What is their view on wear & tear? What I mean is, if you pickup a nail when your thread is 4 mm, will you get a FREE new tyre?
2- What if a RFT IS repairable? and they could be repaired? Is it their policy to replace RFT regardless?

It appears that as long as the tyre is legal for the AA or 2mm+ for other insurers they will replace with new. The confusion I have with the AA wording is that they imply that only the original tyres are covered, i.e. once you replace a worn set, the cover ceases. That seems a bit bizarre to me but I have not really done any homework on this and will need to look into it further.

I think what they mean by original tyres is the tyres on the car when you start the policy. So when you replace this set, you need a new policy.

Naturally they'll ask about the details of the tyres you have, its condition & thread level.

http://www.car2cover.co.uk/quote_3.php

Hmmm... examples...

3 years cover, up to 17", cover per claim ?125, premium ?149

3 years cover, over 17", cover per claim ?250, premium ?199

Price quoted is one off payment for the full period of chosen cover and provides for up to five tyre replacements for that period.

I paid ?250 for 2 years from BMW ( Excalabur insurance I believe ), when I got the car, but have had 2 tyres at ?200+ paid for by the insurers, so I'm still up on the deal. No excess to pay or tyre price limit.

Slightly off topic - you said you were searching for GAP for the new e60 - many insurance companies do new for old in the first 12 / 18months of cover if you are the first owner from new. I have it on my current 330d - Sainsburys Bank and my last two; Disco 3 & RRS through Landrover's own insurance. The insurance of my 535d will be done via Liverpool Victoria and also includes the first 12 months new for old (seriously good cover quote as well.....and I mean SERIOUSLY good!) Or the other option is to haggle hard with the dealer - I have managed 50% off GAP from a BM dealer before and also taking only 18 months rather than the usual 3 years.......give real consideration to how long you will have the car

GAP from the dealer was just daft. He tried the "it would be ?1200 for 3 years but I will do it for half price" lark but even then it's still significantly cheaper via a 3rd party for back to invoice and even cheaper still for back to outstanding finance.
