So it had to happen... my car got booted in NYC today. I checked the signs before officially leaving my car but apparently I screwed up and misread them, my bad. The second I saw the boot, I knew there was damage to my rim. After I paid the fine and by the time I got back to the car the boot was already removed, that was quick. Unfortunately my suspicions of rim damage were confirmed as several spokes of my 166 rims are now scratched up and dinged. I found a notice of claim form to file with the NYC comptroller. My question is, has anyone files a complaint like this against NYC or any major city and gotten anything? I want them to pay for a new rim & mounting and balancing which will cost the city more than the boot fee and the ticket, bastards, should get what they deserve, not to mention the legal fees they'll have due to the claim request. I figure it's worth a shot to spend some time, take a few photos and waste a stamp. Maybe something will become of it. Any comments?

wow. good luck. we didnt have boots in savannah when i lived there. i would actually just illegally park and pay the 10 dollar fine. it was cheaper then paying for the parking garage. dont know how tampa is. i would be upset. let us know how it turns out. i once hit a pot hole in my maxima and broke the rim, blew out the tire. i thought about filing a claim but was too lazy

That claim probably would have been denied. A few years ago, I hit some major pothole and blew out both tires on my drivers side. I submitted a claim with the city where it happened and a lawyer representing them got back to me saying that they didn't receive any other complaints about that road where my incident occured so they didn't know about the problem. If they knew about the problem and didn't fix the pothole within a reasonable time then they'd pay the claim but since they didn't know, the claim was denied. They said that the pothole would be fixed within 60 days and it's been nearly 2 years and that part of road has been untouched. You can't beat the government, seriously.

Maybe you should file a claim with that city again and reference their comments about fixing it "within a reasonable amount of time"

Parking in the city is crazy, I'd be furious if they damaged a rim what's wrong with just issuing a ticket?

I've worked in traffic engineering for the city and it was standard practice to turn away every pot hole/road improvement claim the first time. If it got submitted a second time or with a letter from an attorney it would then be taken seriously.

I would fight it but if it starts getting too involved and time consuming then just move on.

Always park in a garage in the city, never on the street!

that sucks...you could atleast try and reason with them....admit it is partly your fault for parking in that spot and try to get 75% out of them to refinish and fix the wheels. some is better than nothing and getting greedy might kill any chance of getting anything. good luck

Well that sucks! Good Luck with the repairs and even better luck getting the city to pay for them!
