I get a slight pause when I pull away also, if I have pulled up at a junction, then go to pull out, the car moves off albeit very slowly as if in neutral and rolling or in a really high gear, then i get a slight clunking and then its as if drive has actually just engaged and then the car pulls away as normal, all this takes between 3-4 seconds.
this sounds like you need the SB.
or have you got it already

I have the same problem on my 545. I brought it in and the service guy said that they will be updating the software/firmware in the car to a version that was released 2 days ago. Cobradav, if you are reading this, was there a recent release of software for the 545s or the 550s?
Can anyone verify this? I had my SW updated in 9/08 and the problem did get better but hasn't gone away completely. Let me rephrase - its MUCH better - but hasnt gone away completely, esp in lower gears when moving from a standstill....

I had a transmission software update performed on my 08 550 last week. My two major complaints were drastically improved: harsh downshifts and an inability to brake smoothly. The stuttering/jerking that results from removing my foot from the accelerator and then reapplying while coasting is still there. I don't know if this helps anyone, but my invoice reads "Retrofit Programming--Software Error as per PUMA Case 18527808, Reprogram/Encode Vehicle Including CAS." Anyone care to translate?

My 2005 545I does the same, most pronounced at slow speeds, mainly a jerky down shift (clunk) and possibly upshift at slow speeds into second gear. I've noticed this some, but less jerk at speeks approaching 40mph, but not often. Recently, during a great trip to Bavaria I thought I was about to drop the trans. Mechs said all was good. They found the trans fluid was one quart low. I find this odd since I have no leaks. I'm taking it back in two days. BMW will send a computer read to factory in Munich for overnight analysis- I'm American living in Stuttgart. The idea of software upgrades is interesting, I'm going to ask about this as a possible fix. I can replicate the clunking shift when in sport drive and going in and out of second gear. In full automatic mode, this is happening more often, probably 70-80% of the time- when going slow. This has become more pronounced over the past 1-2 months.

CAS = Car Access System, not associated with Tranny software which would be EGS.

While there does not seem to be any direct info that CIP/PROGMAN 31.01.00 (31.1) or 31.02.00 (31.2) have any "specific" 5 or 6 series STEP tranny fixes they could and just not be listed. There are EGS fixes for non 5 and 6 series (X3 specifically) in those versions. Sometimes the dealer may "assume" they apply to all vehicles, but there could also be very minor fixes that just do not make the list I guess.

BTW, since new at a stop if I force the car into or out of 1st gear you can feel the torque to teh rear end change by a very subtle increase when going in or relaxation of torque if coming our of 1st gear. This has remained constant through all 8 versions of CIP I have had.
