just voicing my opinion.
one of the thing i don't like about my 525i non-sport is the very long shift, i don't know why but the stock shifter is way too long and that's the only thing (besides wanting more power) i would like bmw improves on. i actually enjoy shifting my old accord more than this! keep in mind i have my 07 for over a year now so i should all be used to it...
anyways, i wish i can have the 08 550 short shift without paying for the SP price...
but then you try out the 04 525i manual, so i imagine it should be the same as 07

Another 525 driver. I had both spt and non spt (e60) and for some reason a 525 without spt pkg does not feel too well when taking the tight corners i need to take to commute to work. Even at 55mph you can feel the dif. But the soft-ride if non-sport is pretty neat also. (50/50) comment

you sure do a lot of justification to make yourself feel good about your decision - as mentioned, go forth - we won't hold it against you.
Thing is, I have not made a decision yet, so I sure am not justifying anything. I 'want' the Sport Package, who wouldn't? But I must be 'sensible' with my choice of wheels, literally, or else I'll have a useless car in the winter months. While I ponder the choices, I extended the lease on my 7 - I may just skip the 5er and get the same car I'm driving now, just an MY08. Or, extend the lease until late spring and get the MY09 7.. Not easy decisions

Here's another factors to weigh in your decision:

The discussion up to now has focused on worrying about hitting a pothole in winter months with the sport package wheels. However, this argument is a bit weak, since a 550 w/sport package would be absolutely dangerous to drive in snow without winter tires, assuming you somehow managed to get out of the driveway in the first place.

This means you'll need a set of snow tires on 17" or 18" wheels. This will set you back about $1200, increasing the net cost of the sports package.

I personally find BMWs sport package to be an essential option. IMO, it very much defines the handling characteristics and "feel" of the car. I'd get leatherette seats before I gave up the sport package. (This is not an empty boast; I've actually done this before with one of my previous 3 series.) With this in mind, if I were you, and presumably having a hard time deciding whether to pay for a very overpriced option, I'd probably recast the question to be 535 sport vs. 550 sport. (I sincerely hope I'm not reopening Pandora's box on this subject. ) The 535 will look the same as the non-sport 550, has plenty of power, and will have similar handling benefits compared to the 550 sport.

However, you're not me, so don't let me spend you money. Happy rationalizing!
