Noisy AC (fan?)

My Ride: '05 525d
The AC on my 525d seems to be making a loud chirping noise. It becomes "faster" if I increase the fan speed and slower if I reduce it. Therefore I presume that the problem is somehow related to the fan.
The noise seems to be intermittent and even comes and goes during the course of a journey. No buttons or knobs except for the fan speed seem to affect the presence of the noise (except, obviously, turning the whole system off).
Couldn't find any info on this when I searched but feel free to point me in the direction of other threads if I'm being blind.
