So after not driving the car for a few days (2005 545i), and then going to take the car into the dealer, it stopped making the sound. We'll have to see if it reappears, but good for now.

SUCCESS!!

Ok, the noise came back, and, miraculously, the dealer tech heard it as well on his test drive.

I described it to him as a "whirring" sound heard only when the throttle is open, mostly at lower speeds due to the lower noise levels, coming from somewhere around the firewall. I told him that it sounded to me like the valvetronic motors in operation.

It turned out in my case to be a plastic bushing in the steering column.

Here is what was described by the tech:

"Removed D/S lower dashboard cover and inspected steering gear through bulkhead. Found plastic bearing on steering shaft that is inserted into rubber bellow had backed out of rubber. Properly secured plastic bearing. Test drove - noise no longer present."

I can verify - the noise is gone. Can I explain wtf this bearing did? NOPE, but I'm fairly happy that this was resolved. Shocked, really. Expected to live with it forever.

Wow same noise here and ironically right after 37k miles on the clock. I initially noticed it much more in the cold days of winter and tended to go away as the car got warmer. Now it is a little bit more consistent despite how lon the car has been on. I will mention this is a common problem with other bmw's to the tech.

I had the same issue, when I accelerate a noise coming from the engine. I brought it to the dealer and complained about. They said that an emergency latch is loose or something. Issue resolved.
