Well, it's a problem largely because what may be a clean diesel in Europe fails the emissions tests in the states that follow CARB (California Air Resources Board). The NOx emissions are too high on current BMW diesels hence the development work needed for their launch in the US market.
What about the states that don't follow CARB? Do you know EPA emission requirements for these other states? Just wondering how strict they are.

As I understand it, the current BMW diesels could be sold in those states (MB and VW do sell diesels in other states). Trouble is the CARB states happen to make up some of the largest US markets for BMW and without the ability to sell in these states it would have made the certification process uneconomic. The new BMW diesels will be certified for all 50 states.

"What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought."
+1 - Very well said Dranged.

As John McClain (Die Hard) once said... "Fucking California".

Anyway, there's no vast government conspiracy. If anything, diesel cars would be good for America. There is lots of surplus agriculture that gets subsidized in the US, and you can make biodiesel from much of it. Using that or a blend instead of pure diesel would help wean us from foreign oil. Regardless of the political opinions on climate change, no one would argue against lowering our dependence on foreign oil.

I always wondered about the price of Diesel...IIRC, back in the late 70's/early 80's (in the US) diesel prices were significantly lower per gallon than gas. Seems once GM started making the diesels in passenger cars/trucks the price shot up to become more expensive than gas in a relatively short period of time...always wondered why that was I'd consider a diesel auto, but would be a bit concerned about the availability at the pumps....not all stations have diesel these days.

Really? Every filling station on highways need it for the big rigs, and as long as you have pumps in your general local area...

If I ever get a diesel, I'll be feeding it this...

so, are we saying that a 3 litre BMW diesel is more polluting than a 550i under american tests? Euro standards generally show diesels to be 25% cleaner - in terms of Co.

As of right now, the 550i passes tests the 535d etc can't. CARB rules focus on other greenhouse gasses in addition to CO2 and it's here the BMW diesels fall down, particularly NOx. Euro rules are very focused on CO2, the work BMW and others have done to get diesels into the US market was focused on getting NOx etc below the limits. I don't think CO2 was ever a probem.
