Last year Bimmer Magazine said that the 535d is the best car BMW has ever produced. If it was sold here, I'd buy one.
In the area of NJ that I live not all gas stations carry diesel fuel and the ones that do range from $.25 to $.45 more than premium. Do you think its worth going to diesel at that much of a difference in price for fuel?
cheers

Depends on your annual mileage. You'll get about 40% more MPG on diesel for the same size engine.

All we know for now is that BMW is bringing to the U.S. their twin turbo 3.0L inline-six diesel engine (265 hp & 425 lbs-ft of torque ) only to the X5 and 3 series - arriving sometime in late 2008.

As for the 5 series, who knows? It's possible they could introduce it here for the final two model years of the E60 (2009 & 2010). Or they may wait until the next generation F10.
I'm in.

40% is a bit tall. Also depends on your journey.

I get approx 44mpg from my 520d on a run of over 10-15 miles. If it was a 6 mile run, it would be nearer 38mpg.

I had two E46 models - a 1.9 petrol and a 2 litre diesel. As the company was paying for fuel, i used to thrash both on a 30 mile journey to work. The petrol would get 36mpg and the diesel 42mpg. on the other hand, the petrol made 118hp and the diesel 150hp.

BOOM!! LOL. Just quoting Billy Madison and giving him some crap, I used the guy. I'm no fan of Bush, well I am , just not George... but to think Dubya controls BMW import policy and gas pricing...

I love that the d is finally coming to America. It's about time!!

If the 535d is sold in Europe, but not in the US, can one still do a European pickup, buy it in Germany and bring it back to the US? Or are they simpy not allowed to be brought in to the US until BMW begins selling them in the US? I too will buy one as soon as I can...whenever that is. Thanks.

strange isnt it. Most euro boxes are 1.6 litre pollution controlled to heck economy cars.

In the USA you have 3, 4, 5 lires 6 and 8 cylinder engines commonly fitted. Many on here have 550i which you never see here in uk. And it would be a problem to import a clean fuel efficient 3 litre diesel doing 30+ to the gallon.

go figure

As John McClain (Die Hard) once said... "Fucking California".

Anyway, there's no vast government conspiracy. If anything, diesel cars would be good for America. There is lots of surplus agriculture that gets subsidized in the US, and you can make biodiesel from much of it. Using that or a blend instead of pure diesel would help wean us from foreign oil. Regardless of the political opinions on climate change, no one would argue against lowering our dependence on foreign oil.

Well, it's a problem largely because what may be a clean diesel in Europe fails the emissions tests in the states that follow CARB (California Air Resources Board). The NOx emissions are too high on current BMW diesels hence the development work needed for their launch in the US market. Number two, no one has the first idea how to service the diesels until BMW trains the dealerships. Other issue - the twin turbo 535i is already available in the US market and it essentially brings most of the benefits of the 535d.
