I would love to by an M car, but I have never warmed up to the SMG transmission and because I would use this car most days, the 6 speed manual won't work for me. BMW to date has never considered an automatic even though they are getting better and better, so whats next, and when?

Dont want the new Sports Auto? I heard its very decent.
If not you'll probably have to wait till the next 5 series to get the ZSG tranny.

Well if you learn to drive it at a lower setting then it can shift very smooth and easy with some throttle modulation. SMG 7 speeds in E60 M5's take is almost no effort to make it shift smooth at lower settings. Feels just like any other lazy soft shifting automatic tansmission found in luxury cars.
Hahah I think you have mis read everything completely... Unless I'm the one that mis read everything...
The original poster WANTS SMG... doenst want a 6 speed manual gear box because of traffic and doenst like automatic transmissions... so the only transmission he wants is a Clutchless manual. Since BMW has dropped the clutcless manual in non-M cars hes asking when it will be back.
Not to be an ass but...
As for SMG shifting please check my sig and run some searches to see who you're talking to.
as for my response to your first comment. SMG does not shift automatically. there is a D mode where it "can" shift automatically but in its default M mode it will never upshift for you only down to prevent stalling and emergency braking to make use of engine braking.

Not to be an ass but I drive SMG cars just about every weekday as part of my profession.

I don't understand why daily driving would affect your choice for SMG, you do realize that the SMG shifts itself just like an automatic right?

Also to clarrify. The SMG does have a clutch. If you take out the shift valve assembly it looks like any other manual; gearbox, clutch and all. It just doesnt have a clutch pedal.
