New Audi S6. It has a nice 5.2L V10 as well. Who knows? There might be an RS6 for you by then. If we judge by past efforts, the Audi cars generally do the performance/luxury balancing act better than MB and BMW. At leasts that's how the car reviewers see it. The DSG transmissions Audi has are superb.

Road and Track has a comparison this month with the new R6, the M5, and the E55. The M5 was in 3rd place, but mostly because of the SMG.

Despite the lack of clear timetable, I would suggest waiting for a 550i with the new ZSG transmission - that way you get the automatic-like behavior you want. Then you can throw in a Lotus Elise for fun if you get the need for an agile slot car.
I agree whole heartly on the ZSG. I might get a the new Z06 if I "settled" for a 550i, but still the old one is free, at this point, and, as mentioned, can easily be modded to be way more than perfectly adequate. And, I still want a fast sedan. But, I don't what to pay $90k, or whatever, for an M5 and get beaten in a straight-line by a Merc. If BMW doesn't fix it so that we can at least tie em, then join em.

Incidentally, we'd be OK with the Step on the 550i.

isn't there always going to be something out there that'll beat something out in a straight line no matter what your next car will be?

does your wife have to have the X5?
i'll keep the z06 cause its paid for and with mods will give you ample performance, but it is not a car you will drive daily, nor your wife.
since the reasoning is to only keep 2 cars, the X5 and 545 has to go.
if she's more comfortable in an SUV cause of size/comfort and luxury then your obvious choice is to go for the new up and coming X5 4.9.
alternatively, if she can live with a high performance sedan. which will rule out the M coupe and M3 (V8) - too small for her shopping, then your choices are simple.
E55 (looks too blend/too common), CLS55 (rear seats too small) (or is it AMG65 now?) 550i (smae thing as you already got) and B7 (WOW), yes have you consider the B7?

from my observation, since you mention approaching retirement and living in Pheonix, i'll get the new S class AMG 65. the mercedes style of drivng will be more suited for you as the years row along, ample power with finesse.
people do age, then age gracefully. everyone will be admiring your car. so its either S AMG 65 or B7, if you want to stay in the family.

wouldnt it be nice to start a conversation by, "my previous cars are beemers which were fantastic, but now I am driving AMG......"
You have some interesting thoughts rollee. Thanks. You missed some of what I said, or at least meant to say.

The X5 and the 545i will go. We will repace the X5 with something--presumably a very fast, but somewhat reasonably affordable, sedan. We are fans of fast sedans about the size of those I mentioned. We generally use the back seats mainly for our small dogs. And, people wanting to ride with us will need to fit into whatever size rear seats we choose. So, the size of the rears is not much of an issue. I could make do with an SMG if I was the only driver. And, neither of us wants a manual in the fast sedan. Given all of this, it looks like only one of the Mercs will do--not that I would mind that much.

But, then there's the issue of the other car. I would go with an M3 if, stock for stock, it would be as straight-line fast as the my Z06 or even the M5. But, alas, it won't be, I guess. It probably will be about like the C55 AMG of two years from now and will come embarassingly close to the straight-line performance of the M5 through the 1/4. I wish BMW would put a "properly" shifting Step in the M3; then I be happier to think about the M3. I am not sure if I want another manual. Lotuses are fun, and while I am capable, they are not much fun to crawl into and are not really that comfortable. I'd love the surprise factor of a Catterham to all but those in the know, but I've never been in one. The new Z06 seems sort of pointless since I can make my existing Z06 almost as fast in the 1/4 for minimal money.

Another possibility is the 550i and an M3. While a very nice combo, I am not sure it would satisfy my ultimate need to go straight fast. Is there a recovery group for me?

By the way, retirement doesn't mean decrepit. It depends on the individual.

I wouldn't mind a Z06 if I didn't have my son that would be the car for me
