I checked the invoice on my 535d, and noted the Road Tax charge from the dealer was ?205, this got me thinking as I was sure that it was lower, a quick look at vehicle licencing dept showed e60 cars built up to Aug 07 had 182co2 and those built after that (like mine) had co2 of 178.

Then I looked on the BMW web site it confirmed the lower figure. Any one know why?

The car also has lane departure and other free stuff, which is useless but nice.

I think you mean "Sept 07" not "Sept 02"? But yes, I believe all cars went through the "efficiency dynamics" program or something which lowered emissions.

Correct observation, well spotted.

Unforunately I do not know why, as both cars are efficient dynamics LCIs, obviously a tweek somewhere. Fuel consumption has improved too - see below for the various cycles.

Sept'07 LCI ............................. Pre Sept'07 LCI

31.4 mpg .............................. 30.7 mpg
52.3 mpg .............................. 52.3 mpg
42.2 mpg ............................... 41.5 mpg

yes, efficient dynamics, ie brake regeneration, decoupling of generation units such as air co and stuff like that..

No, all LCI were the result of the efficient dynamics programme. This is another tweek.

The pre LCI 535d was 211g/km!

I believe some of the earliest lower emission cars were not registered properly and people were overcharged. You will need to check you documentation because if it's registered wrong you will be charged wrong every year... Have a search on this forum there was definitely something about this!
