I'm doubting that BMW manufactures their own windshields. I'm guessing this is contracted out to a 3rd party. It would seem reasonable that 3rd party windshield installers would have access to the original equipment, and thus, be able to install original equipment windshield. Possibly even better than BMW, since that is what they do for a living.

Anyone have any inside info pertaining to this?

+1.

What's the point in buying a luxury BMW and then save some pennies

Edit:
I just realized you Dkime3 are an (ex-)soldier, so forget the above.
But still, keep your fine automobile in mint shape and buy only genuine BMW parts.

Hahah no no you guys are both right. Both Ricracing and Nickolas_g snapped my head back on right. Minor correction though. I'm not a soldier I'm a Marine but thank you to the both of you.

I am glad that you took this with stride and class. But of course I am dealing with a different bunch of sort here.

I tip my hat to you all here, new and old.

I'm not sure what the deal is with dealers in your cities, but here in NY, most dealers outsource bodywork/paint/glass repairs to other shops. Its perfectly reasonable to get something fixed outside the dealer, and if you bring it to the same shop the dealer would have outsourced it to anyway, then you'll get the same quality repair while saving money by cutting out the middleman (dealer).

The other thing is, getting the windshield repaired through insurance is perfectly reasonable too. If the glass shop they contacted isn't helpful, then its your insurance co's responsibility to contact the dealer to get the right part. Basically, your insurance co (and their affiliated repair shops) is supposed to do all the legwork for you. That's what you pay then for. Keep hounding them to get it done.

The windshield is identical to the 07 MY so OEM replacement is really no issue at all. BMW always changes part listings according to MY even if there has been no change. Any knowledgeable glass installer should recognize this fact and also be perfectly competent to do the job.

When i had my glass replaced, i was told that the 08 550i uses a different glass than 07 550i. Thats what they told me anyways.
