New Symbol - Tiny Envelope.

Suddenly, for no apparent reason, a small icon, shaped like an envelope has appeared on my screen.
It's in the very bottom line, just alongside the phone signal-strength indicator.
At first I thougt " Wow, I finally have an indicator to inform me when there are messages " ( as I had in the 2001 740i )
However, I had no messages when the icon appeared.
Does anyone know what the hell it means?
