The camera was set on auto mode. So, what it saw is what we got.

Thanks.? Do you guys work much in RAW?? I've also recently been enjoying this book...? it's the rage in photo circles these days:

I've used it a few times but didnt want to bother with the conversion takes too long and takes up too much space... I'm happy with Superfine mode and Large.

I agree.
1. nothing wrong with using ISO 400 if you need to boost the speed for some reason. On my 20D I assure you, an untrained eye will not see a difference between ISO 800 and ISO100. I ocassionally use 1600 as well. It's that good ( at least on the 20D).
2. f setting on the E60 were correct - you want a good depth of field.
3. Jpeg fine is generally excellent. Use RAW if processing certain parameters of the foto. Takes experience and you need to know what you're doing.
Interesting. I just uploaded two bright sunlight photos to the gallery. They were taken with my Minolta DiMAGE G500. I think the photos are slightly better, including more detail, than with the Rebel--with both cameras set as automatically as possible. Additionally, I did no Photoshopping on the new images, other than the obvious (e.g., resolution), except for using the healing brush to eliminate some tiny spots of glare on one of the photos.

Wheres the link? I want to see
is it These two?
Both are taken by the Minolta where are the equalivant photos taken with the rebel? Should take some back to back for comparison... BUT those two pics do look good! I like. Might have to consider a Minolta now.
Yes, you found them. The last five or six that are in my album were taken with the Rebel. One of them, from the side, is very comparable to the first one you posted above. The info above each image identifies the camera used and the conditions. The Minolta is known to have a good lens, etc. The comparable photo from the Rebel is the third one at the start of this link. Also, the first one at the start also is a roughly comparable photo for the second one you posted.
