I was reading an article in a bmw mag which was testing the 730d...it had the latest software for the nav system and there is a new view...birds eye which looks really neat and kind of 3d compared to the original map view.

does anyone know if this is supported on the E60 professional nav system or is it only for the E65?

So you think that this feature will be on the new E60's too? Or that it can be upgraded with a software patch?

The date on that article is Sep. 12 2001. I would have assumed that if they were going to use the 3D system they would have implemented it in the 7er in the 2.5 years since that article was written.

Having said that, I also remember reading in one of these boards many months ago that there were some BMW E60's with 3D NAV's in Japan, but have not heard anything since.

The magazine was BMW Car and the reviewer thought it was a bit gimmicky. Not as good as the clarion bird-view view. |Infact he thought the original 2D mapm was much easier to follow.

FYI, the new 3d view is not on current 6 series yet, only Current 7 series comes with it but imho, it must only be a software upgrade so it may appear in the future.

It would be cool to hear the nav say: "Turn left after the church."

Since it takes BMW so long to implement this type of technology, maybe the command will be "Turn left where the church used to be".

i've used Destinator: the bird's eye view is far better than the map... in fact using Destinator convinced me not to buy the proNav since, having used a gps for over a year, i found that direction were most useful, that i still need a road atlas in the car to do planning, etc. and that tiny little maps, particularly whilst driving, are useless. imo.

Agreed. The map view is very useful when planning a trip - but did atleast in the E39 not seem sufficiently precise to provide much help while driving. The essential thing while driving is being given a correct, spoken direction to one's target.
Also on the E39 (haven't tested the prof. nav. on the E60) the route list didn't always add up with what was charted out on the map - it would seem sometimes that the charted route on the map was lagging a bit.
