A friend of mine told me yes, but its hard to believe.

Did your friend give you a specific believable reason? or was he talking from his own personal experience?

i'm curious if this is true, why bmw would be this...

I'm pretty sure it's true. With my Merc I had the same and With my new 525D 2008 LCI the fuel consumption has already gone down about 0.1 liters/100km after 6.000km. This due to the better fitting of the cylinder rings and the engine frees up a little. However, this change will never be liters but only a marginal amount.

well, 0.1 is pretty much if you consider how much fuel you use in a lifetime

according to bmw mine should use 0.56 on highway driving. I've managed 0.68 so far.

MY 520D 2008 LCI gets around 9.5-10 l/100km so far. I'm at 1800km I'm still a ways off from fully breaking it in. Is this normal for urban driving or ? Curious as to what mileage other people have got. (And why do we still call it 'mileage' when it's obviously in metric? hahahah)

Wooot? I get 6.5 l/100km, so 10% above listed mileage. Done 7800 km so far. There is no upward or downward trend in the mileage. Computer claims mileage is better, at 6.1 l/100km. I do not have a heavy right foot and drive relatively many miles on the highway (where I typically drive no faster than 127 km/h)

Yepp, both my non LCI and LCI 530d have been thirstier the first 5.000km. My driving cycle gives me around 8l/100km when broken in, and 9,5l/100km before.

Almost the same for me. Now I'm at aprox 8.3. (Considering I have 4WD)

9.5 seems not right for an 520d ....
