The design of the iDrive controller know has changed in the LCI with a black rubber around edge as well as the insert on top.

What I didn't notice until just now is that that it no longer has 'operational feedback'.

See the word document in http://forums.e60.net/index.php?showtopic=35366

For those of you who have iDrive with force feedback... is this a feature you would miss?

Yes I would miss it. Backwards step, wasnt this the way it was for early E60s or ones with no NAV?

I see where it says that but I don't buy it. Why would they eliminate that feature? I think it only was on the CCC cars but still, why take it away?

The only reason I can think of is that the force feedback contributed to the sluggish response of the controller so they may have decided to take it out so that less people would bitch about it...

The only drawback of force-feedback is it's a pain in the tail to scroll through long song list in iPod
Other than that, I would really miss it.

I said this in another recent thread but will say it again. The force feedback is just about the only thing I DO like about the current iDrive. They would have to make it much, much more efficient to make up for removal of that feature.

Yes when I read the "UK Word Document" earlier I thought it was a retrograde step too.

Then, IIRC, I saw another document (sorry can't remember which one) which described the iDrive controller as having feedback.

It will be interesting to see which way the dice lands.

Incidentally, I guess the "soft close doors" in the Luxury Pack don't seem to float anyone's boat...

I guess it's all what you are used to. I have a 2004 525i without navigation. I do not have forced feedback on my idrive controller. In fact, I didn't even know it existed until I recently test drove a 550i. The idrive controller with forced feedback felt really strange. I'm sure I would get used to it though. One thing I know I would definitely get use to very quickly is the power of the 550i compared to my 525i. Wow!!

I think you're right that it's all in what you're used to. Force feedback can be nice because it helps you to use iDrive while keeping your eyes on the road a bit more. How much more? Not much more...

One thing that is annoying is when the "force" is keeping you from turning to the next click because it's waiting for the processor to catch up. As I already said, if they really did remove the force feedback feature from CCC cars, which I'll only believe when I see it, then the only reason that makes sense to me is to eliminate this annoying "feature."
