It does indeed look like the 5series will get the new idrive. Quote below
The new generation of BMW iDrive standing out in particular through the newly designed Controller including direct selection buttons, an optimised menu structure and innovative display technology, is being introduced in parallel both in the new BMW 7 Series and in the new BMW 3 Series, and is also featured as of autumn 2008 in the BMW 6 Series, the BMW 5 Series, and the BMW 1 Series.
The M5 Saloon, M5 Toruing, M6 Coup? and M6 Convertible also come as standard with the new generation of BMW iDrive. Extra safety, in turn, is offered on all four models by the new exterior mirrors covering an even larger area of vision. And last but not least, a new metallic color included in the range is Carbon Black.

You have the single slot for a CD on the center stack but not the DVD drive for the SAT NAV correct? And... you have the Navigation Professional option? If both answers are yes, then congratulations! You have the new i-Drive!

Take a look at this one. The attached link has pictures of a U.S. Spec 550i bought my a U.S. Serviceman in Germany through the military program. The car has 8.8" screen which means it has the Navigation Professional and it only has the single slot for the CD. No DVD drive for the SAT NAV.

If you don't have the Navigation Professional, I believe you'll just get the new controller.
