I don't think the new 525i will be a 3.0 litre engine.

BimmerStev3:
Wait for the new 525. I drove a 525i Steptronic Touring, I thought it would be enough for me, but it really wasn't. But if you still want to buy the 193hp 525i, take the 6-speed stick tranny. Much more agile IMO.

Welcome Bimmerstev3. Great looking ride you have there. Why not keep it a little longer. Wait for a facelift model to come in before you make the switch. Might be another year or so, but what the hell; you've got a really nice car there, so go ahead and enjoy your investment to the most first.

Chopped from GCF:
The BMW 325i is also making its debut in spring 2005: Maximum output is 160 kW/218 bhp at 6,500 rpm, maximum torque 250 Nm/184 lb-ft between 2,750 and 4,250 rpm. Engine displacement, as the model designation indicates, is 2.5 litres."

US - 3.0 Liter
Non-US - 2.5 Liter

Reason - US emission certification requirements are too expensive to justify another engine and there is very little market in the US for a 2.5 liter engine in a $50k car.

It
OK! Thats funny, then at least you'll get the sound of a 3.0 litre engine in the 525..

I've hard to see why there is a 525 in the US. It's not that big difference between 525-530 anyway. I was at bmwusa.com and built "my own" fully loaded 545i SMG, i was shocked to see that it was $23.000 cheaper than my NOT fully loaded 530d..

I had a 323i, and a 325i before moving to an E39 525i.

Whilst the 5 was a bit heavier, it did not really make the car feel slower or sluggish.

I loved the 3 series, but after experiencing the added space, more refined ride and more luxurious interior of the 5, I can never go back to the 3. (I really noticed on the couple of occasions I drove rental 3's, whilst owning the 5)

As someone else already said, the new engines also have increased power.

Another advantage of buying the 5 is that you also have the best board on the net dedicated to it.

Good luck deciding.
