I thought of this first and am probably on my way to solve this issue too! What I did was buy a gearshift knob with the light inside, I then put a resistor instead and the gear shift is now nice and warm, but I don't use it because my method is too crude and I fear I may burn something if my values are not right. But hey it work and BMW should read this and implement it too.

I say this half in jest, but compared to the nice, thick, warm steering wheel, the gearshift knob is cold. 

YES YES YES, we need this... I thought mine didnt work on something, but found out it was never made, I like keep my right hand on the knob...
