Cool - wiki confirms my personal knowledge (my brother took delivery of his E60 in July 2003).
Now I might ask you why knowing that you called it a 2003? But again ..... digression is such a wasteful thing.
Find out what model that steering wheel is from (looks like an M) and then research on realoem.com to see if the SZL interface is the same PN as your2003 2004.
This is info on the SZL for a different model series but will give you an idea of what it is and how it works.
