Thanks for the kind words guys. Hopefully I find out today what happens to the car. She wasn't flooded per se - just water sucked into the intake and a ruined engine. Basically a large splash, and definitely no water inside the car by any means.

Always wondered, how come - with all the technology that we have today - there is no engine that is not vulnerable to something so banal, like water in the intake... I feel for you, but its all good in the end, no doubt Main thing: you're alright, the family is safe. And cars - cars are just junk sooner or later, so just hang in there, while this get sorted. I'm sure, whatever happens, you'll come out better off.

That really stinks! I'm sorry to read about your misfortune. I know how I'd feel if I was in your shoes. Good luck. I hope this is resolved to your satisfaction.

If it isn't "totaled", you should have the dealer instantly take it back on a fabulous trade for a new or nearly one. They are around or the dealer will find one for you. The issues down the road after the new engine is no longer fresh should seriously be considered. Sorry for you recent
trials and tribulations.

If the cost of the repair is more than 40% of the total value due to WATER DAMAGE by law the insurance company has to total it. This law was enacted after H Katrina. Same thing happened to my dad's 650I except that they said the trans and the diff needed to be replaced.

This is the number that I was looking for. Valuating the car at $40K-ish, the damage is definitely more than 40%. However, the definition of "water damage" may refer to a flooded car, not one that just mechanically ingested water. As mentioned before, no water got anywhere except the intake. Attorneys?

Maybe I should clarify. My dad was driving his 650 through a flooded intersection and a 18 wheeler coming from the other direction flooded his car with the wave and Hydro locked his motor. Since water in an engine is Water damage, it was ruled a totaled car based on the Katrina law. so this sounds very similar to what happened to your car. Your insurance company will make that decision for you.

I am so sorry to hear that. I would fight to have the car totaled. If they refuse to total the car, ask for compensation for diminished value. I don't think there is too much of a market for cars where the engine was replaced.
