My car is going in to the local BMW dealership for a CIP version upgrade to CIP 26! Supposedly this is the new version for the 2008 5 series with the Facelift!

I will keep you guys posted on what really happens or if it will sort out the issue with the tailights.

Do you have warranty upto 100K miles? if so, you can tell them some issue with Idrive/Radio and they will upgrade to latest software.

To be honest I never paid for upgrades - I have been a customer with them now for the past 11 yrs + this is my 5th bmw purchased from the local dealer.

I really do not know if you have to pay them - but what I do know is if you basically complain that something might be wrong with the transmission / radio / NAV / or anything that might cause a fault, then they will plug it in and do a check and might upgrade software automatically.

I am not sure if thats true! Your car will require software upgrades for items that car controlled by modules such as transmissions / light retrofits / airbags / even basic car functions like check function.

If your dealer states that your car does not need upgrades - they may say that to avoid doing unnecessary upgrades. These upgrades take up alot of a mechnic's time sometimes ranging from 45mins up 3 hrs +.

You may want to call up other dealers in your area to check to see if they might help. Our dealer just got CIP 26 today from germany, they were downloading it from their server and I was told its quite a big big download. I was even told that it should include all necessary software upgrades for the 2008 model 5 series. They also told me that since it was quite a big download - it probably has all the necessary retrofit software upgrades.

I am dropping my car off on saturday - will keep you posted.

I had an upgrade last week. Will it be 26.01 then?

By the way, since the upgrade was carried out, my iDrive has crashed 4 times so far!
