...its not going to be that close to the M5 at all, it will be quick, but not M5 power, and modding is not really an option for the E60

also realize that the 550i will command a significant premium in price over the current 545i as BMW moves it upclass

...i dont think it will be worth the difference for .02 of a sec 0-60, imho

I wouldn't be so shure. I think 550 will canibalize some M5 sales:

360HP - Ok still lower but 360 p Torque is right there. Plus judging from 545 driving the torque distribution of the 550 is going to be close to e39 M5 from 1500 RPM up pretty flat - vs. M3 like torque curve for the new M5
Get it (550) with a manual and it will definitely hang in there with m5 till 80-90 mph.

e39 M5 only walks away from 545 in the top 3d to 4th upshift so 90mph plus (545 ? about 5.8 sec to 100km/h)

so 550 (around 5.3 sec 0-100km/h) will tie e-39 M5 and will run with e60 M5 in p400 setting. One will need a lot of button pushing to wake up the beast and rev it up close to 9K rpm.

Plus automatic 550 will be closest thing to auto M5 ever. You can get SMG (toned down) which might eatsome M5 sales as well. Plus other gizmos like active roll stabilization and active steering and 20K USD savings and no wait...

HMMM....

PS .Here are the stats for e60 M5:

I am not in market again until 2007 or 2008 but I would hold out for the 550 and pay the premium. Its not just the engine, but also the component fixes that come with the newer maturer E60. Then there are the other cool toys that I want like the newer 3d NAV an improved communications system even better fit and finish. After 7 months of blissful ownership, I can assure any Newbie that this is a complex car a dream to drive but still has room for improvement. Every model year will bring some subtle improvements that will add to ownership experience. I know my 06/04 production car is a different car to any late 03 production E60.

You can definitely do better than that.

The revised specs for the car is now Silver Gray mettalic, Black interior with the the dark maple wood, Logic 7, Sirius sattelite, Sport,Nav, winter pack and folding rear seats. Chickened out of HUD!
Deal is 813 per month with about 2700 down 36 months 12k /year.
If any one can get a better deal I will revisit my dealer specially now that he's messed up my original order.

That isn't a very good deal. You could get that car for about 750/mo 12k miles, 36 months with $0 down.
I got basically the same car (without sport, but with a few extra options) for 736/mo.

When you say "2700 down" do you mean inception fees only or a cap cost reduction, or both?

I am a little confused. I just ordered a $65,000 sticker car for ED. I have a cap cost of about $57,500, a $7,500 discount off MSRP. I am paying about $730, all in, including taxes, with minimal drive-off. I thought this was a good deal. I figured I was saving about $100-$150 on my monthly payment versus a non-ED car.

If doctors4bob deal above is accurate, that means the dealer sold him the car below his cost?

Are these BMWFS leases? Is there another bank offering different residuals?

Am I missing something here?

I think M5 and 550 performance will be very close because of similar torque and the excess weight in both cars. That V10 motor was optimized for an F1 car not a tank. Only difference comes from faster shifting on the SMG and the LSD on handling. Now if you get a 550 in 6 speed, upgrade suspension, brakes, tires, exhaust ... it will probably beat the stock M5 on a medium sized track. Not that you would ever want to track a 3700lbs car anways.
