I think the GTO looks pretty good in some pictures, but if you take it for a drive, I think you'd change your mind about the car. I didn't get to drive it that much, just a quick loop around an autocross setup, but after I was done, I really didn't want to drive it anymore.

The Shelby GT500 looks to be a great bargain for $40K, but some of the acceleration numbers I've seen are not that spectacular for 500hp.
Thanks. I have no mind set about the GTO. I'm just having some fun with the issue Ray raised. And, recall that one of the results for the M5 is not extra impressive given 500 hp and 90k--e.g.:

BMW M5 MT 3/06 4.80 12.90 114.90.

Here are the Shelby values again for comparison.

Ford Shelby GT500 CD 7/06 4.50 12.90 112.00
Ford Shelby GT500 MT 7/06 4.70 12.70 116.00

Note that the Shelby "wins the MT race" on all dimensions.

Yep, and those are the slow sub 5 sec. cars.
I am sorry Znod, with the exception of the Jeep and some Pontiac or Chrsyler on your list how often do we meet those cars on the road?

If I were in a 545/550 I wouldn't be challenging those as who in their right mind would try to out run like an Elise if I see one?

But thanks for the heads up though

But, what's the point? Incidentally, if you examine the number from the M5 and M6 RT comparo, then you'll see that there is a problem with the M5 numbers. The M5 has to do something remarkable to end up even with the M6 in the 1/4 or some serious rounding errors occured. I'll try to find this discussion for you. I am assuming your numbers are from the comparo, but you didn't provide issue dates, so ...??? Also, the comparo tests compares European version M5 and M6's--with full launch control--not the US version which might somehow be pertinent to the discussion. And, what do the Corvette, 03 Cobra, and M6 values have to do with the topic under discussion? I need issue dates; I am not even sure what Covettes you are referring to, or why? The Corvette, for one, is not even in the right weight class--Ray's.

Here is a link to the comparo discussion. By looking at the data found there, I see that you are referring to the comparo. I sure would like to have the issue dates for the other tests you refer to.

If you follow the progression of the thread, then you'll see the points of my sequential posts. There is no reason one might not meet up with most of the cars in my first post. And, remember, the first poster mentions "look[ing] for the approach of a nice performance ride in the outer lane." In my initial post, I focus exclusively on the slower fast cars that would give the poster a problem at the next red light. Then, the direction of the thread took some turns, but I remained pertinent to the points made.

I just posted numbers for comparison, not really trying to make a point. I was just expecting more from the 500hp GT500, despite it's weight. The M6 has 500hp along with a similar weight, but has better times and a much better trap speed. The corvette is a regular C6 and with just 400hp keeps up with the GT500. The '03 cobra is a mustang with over a 100 less hp, but somewhat similar times to the GT500.

I guess I need to fully read the thread, but I have no idea what "ray's weight class is." I just posted that for 500hp, the numbers for the gt500 were a bit underwhelming.

Regardless, I think you put way too much weight into these magazine numbers. Some people have quite a disdain for magazine racing, I don't really mind it, but anything can happen in the real world despite what road and track says.

Znod,

I don't know if it's been mentioned in your g-meter threads, but perhaps you should consider investing in a AX22. I'd think you'd have a lot of fun with it.

Not sure if this is still ongoing, but they were trying to get an AX22 group buy here http://www.6speedonline.com/forums/s...ad.php?t=45678

Oh, I see. I don't over subsribe to the idea of magazine racing, but when it's all you've got that might shed some light on an issue, then I say use it. I certainly use other media to make points when I have data--e.g., g-meter results, kills, and drag-strip times.

I know what you mean by underwhelmed. I feel that way about some of the M5 results, but not really the M6 results. I like the GT500 results because the car is so inexpensive, but, yet, might perform close to, or in some cases, better than the M5. What I have been doing is responding to Ray's comment in post #20--"Would love to have one of those sub-5 listed Jeeps, Cadillacs, or anything else in our weight class try this exercise with me.... " I was just suggesting some cars that look like real contenders in his weight class--the GTO and the GT500. And, there are more, of course. I picked out some cheap American cars for starters.

Yep, and, recall the acceleration data for the latest GTO.

Pontiac GTO CD 1/05 4.8 13.3
Pontiac GTO MT 2/05 5.0 13.3
Pontiac GTO MT 7/06 4.7 13.3

And, here's another interesting contender. It just might have a chance.

Ford Shelby GT500 CD 7/06 4.50 12.90 112.00
Ford Shelby GT500 MT 7/06 4.70 12.70 116.00

Figure 8: 24.5 sec @ 77g
Slalom: 69.7 mph

Base price $41,950
500 HP
3944 lb

Here are the prior handling data on the 545i and the GTO.

............Slalom.........Figure Eight
545i:....66.0 mph.....26.6 sec @ .66g
GTO:....62.4 mph.....26.8 sec @ .66g

And, just think; Fords are rated higher than BMWs by J. D. Power. The Shelby even is reasonably competittive with the M5 for about half its price.
OK Z, here's a stats Q for you: Your records are for "stock" 545s (mine is 04). But what about firmware updates? You, of all people, (who has said he'd like to regress) has found that updates can spell r-e-t-a-r-d-e-d speed....

now what??

Show up at I-90 exit 2 (NY) about 8:30 am any work morning? I'm in the black 545i 6 spd...lol (please bring your pickup...)

Cheers,
Ray

Same here amigo, but you do not always just need the V8, when you let the diesel eat the road that is also where the fun begins
Deisel power works fine also...added sting in the tail when they see the "d"
