Seeing truck suspensions rearing up ugly in the rearview mirror can be quite amusing.
Good trick Ray. It sounds like much fun, safe (at least for you), and allows a mixture of acceleration and handling. I was thinking about what cars might be good competitiors (i.e., sub 5 and in your weight class) for your "race." I'll suggest some cars without fully knowing their twisty capabilities and weights. It should give us all something to discuss maturely. Here is my discussion list. I may have missed a few cars that I obviously should not have listed. Hurrying. Have fun all.

Actually, I prefer the reverse: My exit to work off the Interstate is two lanes and has two rather sharp curves over it's nearly half-mile length. I enjoy having someone (often a kid as it is the Univeristy exit also) or even better, some guy is truck/SUV try to muscle me along the main road. At the Exit, I hold off and let them grab the advantage as we get onto the 2 lane off ramp. Then, I downshift to 3 or 2, and position myself to come on strong, right in the first left curve. I accelerate hard through it and then set up for the next one (less sharp) right, and then get ready to jump into the more open of the two lanes and through the traffic light, onto the city street at the end of the exit.

In other words, I like to play with the tires and suspension as well as the throttle. Only problem is you don't get to see the look on their faces as I power away in that curve, but it's almost as amusing to see them struggle to keep it on the road. Some actually nod at the stoplight, but most never recover before I'm long gone onto the next piece of fourlane.

Would love to have one of those sub-5 listed Jeeps, Cadillacs, or anything else in our weight class try this exercise with me....

Cheers,
Ray Hull

I really like that one.

I've got another. There is a long (1/4 mile) two lane highway exit that splits into a semi sharp left going up hillup and a softer right going downhill. (290 Westbound merging to 294 and Roosevelt for you Chicago guys) Right before the road splits into separate lanes it dips under a large overhead highway that resembles a tunnel with lights. At the bottom and in this tunnel, the road (still two lanes) is slightly banked and bending tightly to the left. The road divides after tunnel. The cornering forces are fairly high and you feel the suspension compressing. If cars are in both lanes ahead of me, I'll rocket by and snake between them just before approaching the tunnel. Since I'm traveling 15 to 20 mph faster, the cars will see a silver grey blur before and through the tunnel. They'll also see my back end veering off to either the left exit or right exit, dependent on the one that looks less congested or just catches my eye. I can get home either route. The cool thing is most drivers are uneasy at the speed of the exit ramp, the oncoming tunnel, and the number of cars grouped together. Then they see a flying bimmer snaking and flashing by. Cool.

On one occasion, I hit the bottom in the tunnel with good speed after snaking thru three cars. The back end twitched and kicked out alittle at the bottom as it hit some pavement imperfections or possibly a road seem. Just as this was happening I was hitting the throttle. To my great pleasure, the E60 quickly found better grip and complete composure. We hit the left ramp with some serious momentum. Wow. It really hit me then how truly great the e60's suspension is.

Of course I'm careful about leaving room between cars and will NOT pass if conditions aren't good. However, other motorists may think the E60 driver a tad nuts.

I found the curb weight of the GTO--3787 lbs. (also, 400 hp, 400 tq, and base price $32,685). So, I suggest the GTO as a worthy contender for Ray's crown.

Pontiac GTO MT 2/05 5.0 13.3

Do it all the time. However, twice in the last 3 days had similar fun with a Cayenne TT and an S (at separate times and different states). It appears Pepper owners have a real bug up their butts when it comes to the 550.

The turbo guy (debadged) passed me after being on my tail for a while (both doing about 65). I just let him go, but a mile later while he was probably about 1/8th of a mile ahead of me I punched my car on a stretch of the road I always like to have fun on. As I was about to pass him (he was in the right lane) he pulled up into my lane. He was doing about 90 while I was doing 120+ and I had to slam on the brakes. I moved into the right lane next to him and saw him laughing and gesturing as if he had done something funny. At that point he punched his and I punched mine and i was surprised how quickly I left him behind, especially considering the fact that we were going at a pretty quick pace and his turbo did not need a lot of additional revs to pick up boost. I would then let him catch up and then pull away just to humiliate him in front of the blonde that (I imagine) he was trying to impress. I did this several times over the next 8 miles or so until he finally gave up and got behind me flashing his headlights. I wish there was some way for me to tell him to put a light to that piece of junk and get a real car!

BTW, my wife did not think it was funny (when he pulled up in front of me).

I'm sure everyone is enjoying their big V8s with the nice warm weather lately. Here is a new trick of mine. Just don't try it at home.

Assume your ready to right turn onto a fairly busy four lane road (two lanes in each direction). Look for the approach of a nice performance ride in the outer lane. Make sure its going about 40 to 50 mph. As it approaches, make a slow and lazy entry in the nearest lane before the car passes you. The driver should be thinking he'll blow by given his speed advantage. As the E60 straightens out (with sport selected), nail your throttle all the way down and wait until the E60 attains the same or slightly greater speed. He'll be suprised as it happens in a blink of an eye. For extra impact, make a semi-dramatic but safe lane change in front of the other car. Nothing reckless just real sporty.

This method is a nice way to display the E60's acceleration and gives you a thrill as well. Did this to a relatively new A8 yesterday. Not racerboy stuff, just semi aggressive fun. I was probably under the speed limit too.

Even my wife thought this was fun.

Excellent. And to think that they laughed at me when I wrote a similar post on the Ford Pinto chatboard.
I was unaware that the Pinto had a "sport" mode

I ran a 05 GTO before from a 5-10 mph roll and was about even to 100mph. I got a lot of tire spin going into 2nd which is where he jumped ahead about 1/4-1/2 car length. I don't remember him pulling in 2nd or 3rd gear however.

I believe the '04s have a little less hp.

I checked out handling as well as I could--both reports from Motor Trend:

.............Slalom.........Figure Eight
545i:....66.0 mph.....26.6 sec @ .66g
GTO:....62.4 mph.....26.8 sec @ .66g

So, I think the GTO would give Ray a run for his money under his criteria.

Yep, and, recall the acceleration data for the latest GTO.

Pontiac GTO CD 1/05 4.8 13.3
Pontiac GTO MT 2/05 5.0 13.3
Pontiac GTO MT 7/06 4.7 13.3

And, here's another interesting contender. It just might have a chance.

Ford Shelby GT500 CD 7/06 4.50 12.90 112.00
Ford Shelby GT500 MT 7/06 4.70 12.70 116.00

Figure 8: 24.5 sec @ 77g
Slalom: 69.7 mph

Base price $41,950
500 HP
3944 lb

Here are the prior handling data on the 545i and the GTO.

............Slalom.........Figure Eight
545i:....66.0 mph.....26.6 sec @ .66g
GTO:....62.4 mph.....26.8 sec @ .66g

And, just think; Fords are rated higher than BMWs by J. D. Power. The Shelby even is reasonably competittive with the M5 for about half its price.

I think the GTO looks pretty good in some pictures, but if you take it for a drive, I think you'd change your mind about the car. I didn't get to drive it that much, just a quick loop around an autocross setup, but after I was done, I really didn't want to drive it anymore.

The Shelby GT500 looks to be a great bargain for $40K, but some of the acceleration numbers I've seen are not that spectacular for 500hp.
