Is the 535i going to be faster than the 550i but uses less gas?

It won't be faster, but it will be pretty close.

Preliminary numbers I've heard regarding fuel ecomony for the 335i appear to be about 28/36, which is pretty unbelievable.

The important thing to note is that chipping/remapping/reprogramming the car should net very large horsepower gains for very little money. The 3 series tuner market will ensure that the 535i will also benefit from the engine modification kits - something that hasn't really been plentiful up to now in the 5 series space.

I would say the 535i will be released with the facelift in September '07,
that is MY '07 in the factory scene (EU, Germany).

At the facelift also the other N52 (sixinlines) engines will be replaced with
the new N54 engine family.
See this.

Also a 535xi will be offered for sure and also as a Touring (Wagon).

The 535i will replace the 540i.

Taking about the Touring... a M5 Touring will soon also be introduced.
We may see new engine in 5 this fall.

It's still not clear (and highly unlikely) that the N52 will be replaced. The N54B30 turbo will be added to the lineup. There is no announced N54 naturally aspirated engine.

what the hell? 28/36 for more speed?!?! Is this some type of breakthrough in technology or something? Should we hold off for the 530 that we plan to buy next week and wait for this or what? When are we most likely to see it?

I don't think it's going to be 28/36 mpg. It should be 28/36km/gal. I've never seen any V6 or I6 3.0L can consume 28/36 mpg. Unless it's hybrid.

Yes, lots of new tech. Gasoline Direct Injection - which vaporizes fuel as it is injected directly at high pressure into the combustion chamber. Higher compression ratio is used so more power is made with a "standard" air-fuel mixture. The vaporized fuel burns more completely, producing more power. The new engine also uses piezo injectors, for the quickest response time in order to deliver the most precise fuel volume (hence more efficiency). It also incorporates a new technology from BMW, Intelligent Alternator Control, which from the sound of it charges the battery and electrical system from engine braking - kind of like how hybrids recharge themselves. This supposedly saves ~3% in addition to the another 10% from the new engine. IAC is said to be coming to other BMW engines soon.

The new 6spd auto tranny supposedly shifts faster (.1 seconds) and the new "hydraulic momentum converter" adds a 3% improvement in fuel economy for petrol, and 6% for diesel cars. This tranny should be coming to other cars soon too.

I'd personally wait - especially if you're considering an automatic.

A friend of mine claims he converted the figures BMW published on their German site. He swears he did it correctly, but it would be European cycle.

If your talking about KM then there is no reason to wait but if its miles then we shall wait. The car will probably be like .4 or .5 faster on the 0-60.

No, I wasn't saying kM, but I haven't been able to find any data to support my friend's claims. Can anyone who speaks or reads German dig around on the .de site?

301hp vs. 255hp is quite a jump, and it has -gobs- more torque. More torque than the 4L V8 currently in the 540i. That has to be worth something. The quicker Step could help to shave a few tenths off the 0-60 as well.

The consumption for a 335Ci is EU 9,5 l / 100 km (about 25 mpg).

Torque is 400 Nm between 1300 - 5000 rpm.
Max rpm is 7000!
0-100 km/h (0 - 62,14 mph) is 5,5 seconds (0-60 mph about 5,2 sec).

The 330Ci will have a 275 hp and 315 Nm.
0 -100 km/h is 6,0 seconds.
