If you are going to keep the car forever and ever and ever, you probably would see some benefit by following the run in procedure (which, by the way, is 1,200 not 300 miles!). Maybe in ten years time, the car will have retained 5bhp more and do 1mpg better than it would if you abused it from day one.

My car is in the garage for the second time regarding excessing brake noise, which _might_ be attributed to not bedding them in properly. But at the end of the day, the car has a three year warranty, and I'll swap it before the warranty expires - so what do I care if things break !!
Hey Russ, do you also treat women like this? No warmup?

I drove my 550i easy for about 300 miles varying the RPMs and had squeaky brakes. I did a mild bedding in of them (4 progresively harder 60-20 stops followed by a long cool down) and they haven't squeaked since. I then did a long weekend in the mountains. Each day i pushed the car a bit harder and varied the RPMs a lot. I kept it below 5000 RPMs and tripple digit speeds until passed the 1200 mile mark. I more or less followed the guidelines but certainly didn't baby it for 1200 miles.

Agreed!

Seems very strange to me to spend all that money on a car of this kind to then not run the thing in correctly - if this is the type of abuse from day one while the 'novelty factor' is still present, god help it after a few months! It only takes a bit of self control..... I would put money on it that there is a certain 535d engine going to have some problems in the future - all IMHO of course!

Yeah but I have a three year warranty and haven't kept any of my last 5 cars longer than about 18 months So if the engine blows up at 2 years and I still happen to own the car, then I just get a brand new engine dropped in.

Anyway, car came back from the dealer today with a full new set of discs and brake pads which (so far) has cured the noise problem. I was honest with the dealer and did say I had not run the brakes in and they said "doesn't really make any difference, that wouldn't cause squeaking". To prove a point, I am _not_ going to run them in. Heavy braking as soon as I left the dealer. If these ones start to squeak then we've proved a point and everybody will know that the run in rules ARE necessary. If they don't squeak, then there was something wrong with the original brakes (which is what the dealer said ... fauly components, not lack of running in) - which means running the brakes in is not necessary.

If you don't hear from me again in here, it means the brakes never started making noise again !

I've always thought this to be nonsense, there's been proof made over years of research by many that directly conflicts with manufacturer suggestions for the break in period. and from what I've read breaking it in like you stole it (properly) will actually benefit in the long run as far as engine wear/performance goes. I've broken in new cars/bikes pretty hard the last few years, being sure to quickly change the oil and take other precautions with no problems whatsoever. 17k miles on my 05 E60 and I can run a quarter mile @ 5.1 all day. only problems I've ever had was needing to replace the clutch from too many wot launches

Next week I pick up a new 535d, I normally take it easy for the first 300miles , so that the tyres and and brakes bed in, and after that I tend to floor it.

I tend to agree with RUSS, and will just go for it.

Any reason why I should run in, I am sure I read a thread in the forum, saying oil consumption was less if it was not run in!

Give me your advice!
I would say 300 miles for the tyres and brakes is fine.

I stuck pretty much to the rev limit too for 1200 miles as well, boring I know!

This afterall what is in the handbook.

Regards,

I just want to say ... having had my brakes replaced, and driving it _very_ hard and braking even harder since leaving the dealer a few weeks ago, the noise has not returned. There was clearly a fault on the initial set.

So I still maintain - running in is NOT necessary for brakes or engine !!
