Need a new clutch 05 545
this being my 4th manual transmission car I know when the clutch has seen it's day, my 545 has only 8k miles but between my occasional dumping and my girlfriends lack of knowing how to use a clutch this ones toast.
has anybody had to replace theirs yet? I'm wondering on what the cost might be.
thanks to all

at 8K miles??? wow thats fast! ask the dealer to check it. maybe they can get one under warranty... unless you really did abuse it that much. I would think it should last for more than 8K miles...
well I didnt abuse it any worse then any other car I've owned, but the girlfriend aspect surely took its toll as well.
shocking though, very un-beamerish if you ask me as I thought it would take a lot more then 8 even given a little abuse here and there.

I know people with older M3's that drive them hard and have well over 100k miles on a clutch.
BTW - What the hell are you doing let your GIRL FRIEND drive a $60k, 325hp, manual tranmission, if she does not know how to drive a clutch?

Wow!! 8000 miles, thats incredible, must be a faulty clutch or something. Living in a country where almost every car is a manual, you hardly ever hear of people getting new clutches... Mabey at 80,000m but not 8000. Even the most abused clutches on my cheaper cars dont seem to ever give up.

My Ride: '04 545iS 6 spd, bought new via eBay, 11/05; Blk/Gry, Cold, L7, PDC, BMW Rear seatcover for pets.
First "Bumwa" was a new 1971 2002. High performance 5s since 1987. Beamer motorcycles too, currently on an 07 BMW K1200 GT; also a Moto Guzzi 1000 SP III.
This doesn't sound right. Were yours an E39, I'd be less skeptical (though mine when traded at 100K was only slipping on very cold mornings). They couldn't keep clutches in that transmission, and it's one reason they switched suppliers for the E60 (and we got longer throws)
I would think that something is very wrong, unless you routinely flog or ride it. (E 39 6 speeds were pulled from Susan Koman Annual Test Drives after the first E39 season because they were eating clutches in about 5K miles; but then, flogging's what everybody does on those test rides.)
I'd get it to the dealer straight away.
Good luck,
Ray Hull

trust me this is all to my surprise as well, I mean the clutch isnt totally gone just yet but it's hurtin'. I can tell from a hard shift into second where the wheels used to chirp, instead the revs kind of hang high with minimal momentum. was forced to have her drive this as my original plan on an SMG fell through.
I'm thinking back to the day she tried to start rolling with a lot of throttle from 2nd gear and I saw a nice white cloud of smoke pour out the back as if the wheels were spinning, but they werent. was painful having that awful clutch burning stench coming from my car that day, could have killed the bitch.
I bought the car with abt 4k miles on it from the dealer, it was a dealer used car before I had it so Im sure they had some fun as well. do you think I might be able to get this taken care of under warranty and how might I pull it off if so?

I would definitely take it to the dealer to have them check it out. They might very well replace it under warranty. Make sure you remind them that you bought the car used.

Get your CDV (clutch delay valve) removed if you want that quickness feeling back like a normal transmission. Someone on this board mentioned it's a bit tougher to do on the E60 compared to the E39 but still feasible.
