About 6-8 weeks ago, I began hearing a cyclical wu-wu-wu-wu-wu noise from what seems like the right rear of the car...It speeds up as the car increases speed and become pretty loud when Im at highway speeds. I assumed it was tire noise as the rears were pretty worn so went ahead and ordered a brand new set of wheels and tires (Bridgestone RE760's on Breyton Race GTS's...pix forthcoming), to replace the 124's and Michelin A/S's on the car.

I had the car aligned when I put the new shoes on. Driving out of the shop that did the tire install, the noise was still there, only louder now, since the tire noise from the Michelin's was gone. .I took it to the my regular shop and was told by the tech "oh that's just tire noise"...impossible, I just put brand new shoes on the car . The manager drove it and said the same thing. I dont buy it...can anyone give me any suggestions as to what this may be? The car is an 054 545 with about 67k miles on it....Im thinking possibly wheel bearing, does this make sense?

I had a very similar problem 15+ years ago in non-BMW. I did the same thing: put on new tires, but the sound persisted. Ultimately, it was a wheel bearing, and it was so worn that the hub needed machining.

If you changed the tires already, I would suggest looking at the wheel bearing.

If you fit these to quads would it be possible to play a chord?

When I had a bearings go out in previous cars it sounded more like a grinding/scraping sound. Last time I told my repair shop it was a bearing they decided ignore me and check/replace drive shaft and brakes before finally admitting I was correct...no wu wu wu sound though!

 

Yeah, I was thinking Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water"...aint that the first chord ANYBODY learning the guitar plays???

Seriously, It was a bad right rear wheel bearing. Just got the car back today.
