Why wasn't the CLK for you exactly? Might help to answer your quandry. Based on my opinons and stuff I have read, If you like to "drive" your cars, search for the twisty roads, I say the 545i. If you a looking for fast straight line luxury sedan, then E55.
I was briefly contemplating the E class, but wanted a "4 door sports car" and in my opinion, there was no more contemplating. The only other reason I was looking at the E class is because they had the diesel coming to the US.
My 2 cents.

My Ride: G30 M550i
Model Year: 2018
I drove the E55 extensively over two days during the "AMG Challenge" this year at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway's F1 course. Yes, the car has power -- more than you'll ever really need, I think. It was a lot of fun to drive (as all of the cars were).
All I can say is that although I respect the AMG cars and agree that they are quite nice, each day, after driving every AMG car made on the race track, I was amazed at how much nicer my 545 felt overall as I drove back to the hotel.
The fat steering wheel, Active Steering, Active Roll Stabilization, SMG, the exterior and interior styling, etc. made me grin from ear to ear. I can't explain it except to say that aside from the lack of horsepower, the E60 was clearly the better car. As far as the 545's horsepower -- in my opinion, there's plenty there. (That doesn't mean I don't yearn for the new M5!)

welcome aboard, tonnage
! i think we have a member here (sorry, forgot who :'(), his neighbor has a e55 and they did a little "road test". the e55 owner drove our member's 545 and he said he likes it more
. he said his e55 is too heavy and not as sporty as 545. my friend has a e55 and that car is quite bumpy and noisy <_<. well, i'm comparing w/my 530 non-sport. so mine of course is quieter
. in fact, i asked him and he said the car is heavy but he's always a m.benz guy. so even if the m5 is cheaper, he won't be interested
. if you are in the states, add some options on top of a e55, it'll be close to or little over $90k. it also doesn't come w/the 4 years free maintanence for all the '05

My Ride: 2005 545i SMG. Titanium Grey with Grey interior and Anthracite wood.
Better yet, find someone local you can drive the 545. If you are looking for sporty, definately consider the SMG. I am so impressed with my SMG, I wouldn't even think of going to a manual.
