Bad day for my car I guess. Today I set a destination with Nav but the voice instructions never started. The route was highligted like usual. Also the voice command system voice for radio, climate, etc wasn't working. I tried increasing the volume to no avail. I did the three finger reboot and things were working fine. Just another I-drive snafu?

Based on windows... That's all I can say.
Didn't load something correct on start up and needs a reboot...
It happened to me once too.

It is probably be muted. Hold down the the steering wheel button (if programmed) for 3 seconds to un mute or mute. If not programmed then find the screen below
Navigation voice inaudible-2004manual_5series_page_076_image_0002.jpg
And make sure the field is checked.

Yeah, I think it was probably muted. If it wasn't, then hit that button and turn up your volume. Maybe the voice was just turned down.

You're not alone...

I too had the "mime navigation" once. Instructions showed up in HUD but no voice. Thought maybe it was muted like other suggest but that was not the case. as I held the diamond button and the mute icon would appear/disappear, still no voice.

Upon restaring later all was fine.

Conversly, I've also had the HUD display lockup and the voice instructions continue to work.

It might be the volume. Turn on NAV and turn off the radio. When the voice sounds, turn up the radio volume knob simultaneously. I had the same problem... Guess where I got my advice!
