Hi there, a friend of mine has just bought a new navigation dvd, and the car is telling him : New Software Version, shut down system and wait 5 minutes"

But how does he restart the system?

What should be done when updating the software?
Thanks

By using it after 5 minutes (or longer).

So they should just leave the car on for 5 minutes and then turn it off?
because he said at some point the car said: data read error?

As it says. Shut down the system for 5 minutes (or longer).

Then turn it all on again and start using it.

If someone is getting a data read error then chances are it's a problem with the disc and the dealer may have to supply a replacement.
