I must differ here. I agree the Navigation implementation in the E60 has much room for improvement but your blanket statement misses some of the pioneering companies in engine management like Bosch, Hella, VDO, Siemens,

Now if you were making that statement about Lucas (British) or Marrelli (Italian) I might agree.

if you were making that statement about Lucas many years ago I might agree!!!! Lucas these days is a very different (and high tech) business.

Fair enough, the "German electronics sucks" statement still sucks.

Thats like saying Japanese engineering sucks. Honda kicks butt in F1. Where do these generalizations come from?????

Just to add fuel to the fire here, I think I remember reading a while ago that the SMG electronics on the E60 (and also the Z4) were done by Magneti Marelli. It's not as slick as the one in the M-cars but it works pretty well for the purposes of my 545...

The Pioneer Navigation system allowed phone number entry so lets say I am going out to a restaurant about 40 miles away, all I had to do was dial in the phone number and it would come up with the name of the restaurant and would set the route up for me.?
What about entering the restaurant address directly? I mean, I typically know the restaurant name, not the phone number. And if I have to look up the number, then in general the address comes with it. Ok, the adress is a tad longer.

Not to say this is a stupid idea, just to say that if I were to rank this feature, it would really be "nice to have" and not "must have". Not to mention that the DVD does not know about ALL restaurants (but knows about MOST addresses), so if you just got the phone and not the addres and the phone is unknown you're out of luck.

Anyway another point to think about is patents. Maybe Pioneer patented this great idea and therefore the "feature" may never come to the E60, unless a deal can be arranged. And Pioneer is maybe unwilling to license it cheaply to its competitors, they may prefer to become OEM for BMW...
You'd be amazed the number of patents in the software industry, and what they cover. It's becoming a game in itself, with companies out there having a business of living out of patent licenses. I mean, part of the differences in finished products may just be an Intellectual Property issue, and have nothing to do about core engineering competences.

Oh well, just another angle to consider. German engineering is good, but Intellectual Property departments suck :-)
