My Ride: 2007 530xi, Monaco Blue Metallic, Beige Dakota Leather, Dark Popular Trim, Steptronic, Premium Pkg., Cold Weather Pkg., Heated Rear Seats, Navigation, Sirius,

Don't take this the wrong way but you're better off trading in a non-NAV car for an E60 with NAV. BEtween the cost of the nav components and labor it could run upwards of $5K or more for and option that originally cost under $2K fro the factory 
Nothing is impossible but you have to change a lot sh_t to get inboard NAV installed on your car. In fact a $100 portable NAV will have more features after going through that kind of expense and trouble.

You don't want to just buy a Garmin or something? I was so used to Lexus's touch screen navi, I can't help but hate the use of the iDrive to select letters...slowly...to enter in my destination. It's not too bad, it's just alot harder this time around.

Well, with most GPS systems today, you can even take the GPS out of the car and walk around with it. For example, you go to the city to eat, you park your car away from the place, you don't know the way. You know? Ah, I probably wouldn't do that, but the using the iDrive knob for the navi sucks ass.

Check the DIY section. Business nav can be fitted easily while pro will need more effort and parts. I'm going for the business option since I found the unit on fleabay for 100 bucks. Now I just need an antenna and most likely some programming and I'm all set, acc to ppl here who went the same way.
I currently have a handheld unit that probably is better than the OEM one, but since I found the OEM unit cheap I figured I'd toss it in the car to make it more attractive the day I want to get rid of it. And it looks a lot cleaner of course.

I wouldn't do it. Frankly, my $250 Garmin Nuvi 350 eats up my 550's nav. It's just so much money to do a retrofit when an external nav for 1/10th the price is far superior anyway.
