I know this topic has been thoroughly covered, but I have yet to get a concrete answer to this question:

Can vehicles without NAV and NAV prep, get NAV?

If not, what does the nav prep consist of?

Do vehicles equipped with NAV have a wider screen?

Any input would be great. Thanks!

It can be done as long as you dont live in the US. BMW NA doesnt support dealers doing this.

JJ32, where are you located? Vehicles with NAV do have a larger screen, 8.8" and you need Nav prep, option 6UA to get NAV. Service bulletin SI B 84 10 04 dated July 2004. Call BMW NA or your parts advisor and give him your last 7 digits of the vehicle's VIN #. So yes, vehicles without NAV can have it retrofitted. Mine was completed about 2 weeks ago and works fine. Through May, 2005, vehicles without NAV can get it retrofitted, if you have option 6UA, for the original option price of $1800. BMW NA will pick up any cost above $1800 under the warranty. This info is for the U.S. of A.

Nav pro has teh wider screen, nav business has the standard size.

If you are in the US, the only nav you can get is the nav pro, so yes. If you are over here in Europe, the bigger screen comes only wih the nav pro.

Please give us a location and put it in your profile. Country at least... Thanks!

i highly recommend the garmin streetpilot gps system which sits on the dash, and plugs into the cigarette lighter.
i think the voice direction and graphical interface is far better than bmw.
a less expensive but a better product, simple and effective. no need to open up your entire dash to drill / dig.
i chose it over bmw apart from availability is i need to bring it between 3 cars.

this new model looks nice.

Thanks!

I use the Garmin 2610, sits on the dash as well and works great. I used it in my suburban and moved it over.

I am still considering the Nav retrofit. In the meantime I am using a Navman iCN-510 which works very well. Good graphics and a very good screen with several options for the display. Voice directions are very clear and easy to understand.

My brother uses the Garmin Quest and likes it very much. Either the Garmin or the Navman can be had in the US for less than $500. Somehow the $1800 does not seem so attractive anymore.

Navman tells me they will have discs for Europe that can be used with the iCN-510 in April. Since I go to Germany quite often on business this will be a real plus. No more paying extra for the Nav equipped rental car.

I too have a Garmin 2610 (with 2GB compac flash). I used it in my previous car Audi A6 and I still use it on my BMW motorcycle. It's a good solution.

I still took the integrated NAV PRO on my E60. The integrated NAV has 3 (maybe more) features the Garmin doesn't have:

- It navigates in tunnels or any place where you loose the sattelite signal (Garmin 2620 can do also)
- It integrates with the bluetooth phone option so that you can call the numbers stored on the DVD automatically (hotels, ....)
- it looks and sounds better because it is integrated (my opinion)
