I drove from Boston to NY earlier today and agian noticed something very annoying . . .

When driving city or secondary roads, the (professional) nav instructions tell you the name of streets to turn onto. But with highway driving, at least in the States, the instructions give you the exit number and the cities shown on the highway signs, but the instructions do not tell you the highway number you're exiting onto.

For example, when exiting from Interstate 91 to Interstate 95, the instructions show only exit 27 - New York. They completely ignore the fact that it's an exit to Interstate 95 Southbound. It drives me crazy!!!!

Has anyone else noticed this?? Is it the same in other countries??

In Germany exits are marked with the next major city and route in NAV and on the actual sign along the road. No north, south, east, west.

I assumed that that was part of the issue. I've driven quite a bit in Europe and know that motorway routes are often thought of in terms of major cities. In the US, we think route numbers and direction. I guess it's one of those lost in translation things . . .
