How come the navigation system (Professional) oftens says "Guidance not possible" when I drive into a smaller road (yet the road is on the map)? I'm talking about that kind of roads it's fun to drive on (you know what I mean...)
. If I buy a $50 navigation software for my PocketPC (such as Destinator), it actually can guide me on those small roads! As I understand it, Navtech provides data for both the BMW Professional Navigation and many PocketPC-based systems.
I'm in Europe and use the "Road Map Europe 2005-2" Navigation DVD.

I'm pretty sure it's still a NavTeQ issue so in this case, I'm pretty sure you can't blame BMW.
There are many layers of data on the disc in addition to the presence of the road itself. Layers like is the road one-way, two-way, etc. are added over time so just because the road is there, it doesn't mean the guidance logic is able to use (or trust) the data. I think the general term is that the data is "unverified."
I have the same issue on a brand new Honda. It shows the road and warns you that the system is unable to provide guidance...

I agree with Rudy's assessment as I have both a Honda and BMW with NAV, both of which use Navteq databases. The difference is that Honda will guide you on "unverified" roads, but warn you that the data is not verified, while BMW simply ends the guideance process once you hit an unverified road.

One funny thing however is when you use "map input", and set the destination for one of those "unverified" roads, the system actually takes you there (but of course it sometimes leads you to a countryside road where I'd never let my bimmer drive on...!)
