So I've got this a$$wipe in an E55 on my tail this morning while clipping along the expressway, and at the bottom of the ramp, he's clearly wanting to be feisty, so we get it on and run the cars down the road in some silly macho fashion.

Of course, the amusing thing is that I wasnt paying close enough attention and hit the REV limiter in 3d gear - and yeah, I clipped it pretty good. Whoops!

The quick question I've got tonight is whether the car "records" this sort of thing anywhere in its OBC such that BMW could see how many times I bounce the limiter over the life of the car...

And, just 'cause I'm neurotic, I presume that I didnt harm anything by clipping the limited - I mean, that's what its there for, right - to protect fools like me from themselves?

I would say have no worries. I've hit and bounced off the rev limiter quite a few times. When you hit the limiter it cuts the fuel. Instant loss of power. I've taken the car in for servicing and my SA has never mentioned anything. I think you are indeed paranoid.

There have been discussions before about "living in the red zone" - remember the limiter is at the UPPER limit. Spending too much time "in the red" is a reflection of any socio-economic activity.

It's fun, but it can lead to early burn-out!

What is early burn out? Meaning, the death of the engine?

Wouldnt BMW configure the rev limiter in such as way as to prevent that.....?

Before I test drove and later purchased my 2004 545i Sport, I located a review online in Car & Driver (http://www.caranddriver.com/roadtest.../bmw-545i.html) and noted this statement, "This V-8 is among the friendliest, most enthusiastic engines in existence. It revs so fast, so freely, so smoothly that you'll bang into the 6500-rpm redline five or six times in the first hour of motoring." I paid attention to this statement during my test drive, and continue to be careful with the "redline." What I have noticed is the torque drops off noticeably above 5500 and I rarely take it past 6000.

I was told the car records the max rpm the engine has ever been reved to and I'd assume date/time also. If that's true or not I don't know...
