N62 V8 coolant leak help

#5 is the cover plate with gasket there referring too. Goes on the back of the block behind the transmission. The transfer pipe connects from the front timing case/water pump to the back cover. The pipe itself seals on the block.
that freakin back cover ,, is a jacked up design,,,,,,

Is there an easy way to differentiate a water pump leak vs the dreaded coolant pipe leak?

I would recommend doing a pressure test. You can rent a pressure tester from auto zone for free (refunded deposit). Pull your engine cover off and I would also take the airfilter box off. Do the pressure test no more than 15 PSI. 1. Check the valley pan seam for leaks.
2. check the expansion tank to engine hose for leaks, I would replace this because it will leak....
3. Check the water pump for leaks. If you haven’t replaced this I would plan on it...

Hopefully you just have a leaky expansion tank or upper radiator hose, those are easy to replace...
