What is it that's failing? Is it ripping O rings or something getting clogged or scraped up? Is some port wearing out of round? What is it? Is there a picture of a good part comparing it to a bad part? How do you tell it's bad just by looking at the part?
BMW won't tell, but the reports I've heard are its mixed between orings and mechanical.

BTW HPFP= THE DEVIL!

Who cares that it has a 10 year 120k warranty on it when it fails more times than you have to change oil in 1 year. Also is a Safety hazard and the NTSB is investigating it and BMW ( Ah-la Toyota)there was an article about it on AOL a few weeks back that got swept under the rug. Autoblog also had something about it too.

Exactly why one should change to a better after market pump and your real problem is solved.

People don't updgade to aftermarket HPFP because they don't exist yet, if you know about one you are welcome to share the info.

its not that expensive, and it eliminates your headaches all together, no trips to the dealer no nothing.

After doing some research (something I didn't do because I don't own a TT bmw)
I found nothing on the internet. There are other car companies with DInjection TT/T that have fuel pump problems with AMarket solutions.
Couldnt find any for the bimmer. AMS is supposedly making one.

I should have researched more I suppose. I was going off what I was told by someone at a car meet with a 535i (not a bimmer meet). He had a highly modified 535, and when I asked him what he does about the fuel pump problems with such a highly modded car, he told me he used an aftermarket replacement.

I assumed (big mistake ) that there was one based on what he said. ALthough I can't find one online, I'm determined to find out what he was talking about and if he was full of shit.

Yeah, looks like that guy was lying to you . Still strange that no one (including BMW) so far has developed solution for this major problem...

Whoever does, could make a killer.
But its because of the Direct Injection.
Post 08 models have less and less of the problem I read.

where did you read that...jump on e90oosts and search under "hpfp failure"

you're bound to get at least 17 pages of results...with threads regarding failure from 08-10 models..

it was believed initially that the hpfp was due to early SW versions and not mechanical (08 models)..however it's evident that is not the case...

Hopefully, some mechanical engineer with an out of warranty 535 take one for the guys and volunteer to do a complete dismantle of his own HPFP and reverse engineer it.

The whole stumbling and injector issues led me to get rid of my X35. I was never confident with the car and NEVER drove out of the metroplex with the fear of be stranded along a two lane or out in the middle of no where. In fact, the day I traded, she stumbled badly, but I managed to get it to the dealer in time to just walk away from it. It's design and power is awesome, reliability, well, its a whole new ball game. Too bad, I wish BMW to come up with a solution, but for 3+ years, doesnt look like one is imminent.

I read it on e90post i believe.
I did find tons of hpfp failures.
But I also read that the number of failures reduced significantly after the new fuel pump (9xx) was issued to the n54hp.
I read it for post midproduction 08 models.
