Default N52 Oil levels - Min. vs. Max and sensor location

How many quarts difference of oil between the minimum and maximum level on an N52 engine?

I got a minimum oil level warning on the iDrive. I added only 1/2 a quart of oil and now it says maximum level. ??? Wonder if my oil level sensor is failing.

Anyway, where is the oil level sensor and how difficult is it to replace?

Thanks!

I had the same message on my dashboard last summer and ive added a quart and since then I never had any issue. I take my baby for long trips (i.e Canada)? So I'll be doing an oil change soon and will also like to know where the sensors are located as well. Any images will be greatly appreciated.

When it gave you the warning the car on a flat surface or on an incline?

I had the low level message, added a quart and it went to max. A week later I got Oil level sensor malfunction. I didn't DIY but can tell you it was a 600 fix at the dealer, including oil change.

I actually had this error about a year ago as well. Last time and this time it was about a month before I did an oil change. I'm scheduled to change the oil in February.

Incidentally, the sensor not only measures level, but quality as well. This error came up after using 0-30 and 0-40 oil. It never came up when using 5-30 oil. I don't know if that makes a difference on how the sensor measures the oil quantity and quality.

Also, according to the Bentley manual, the sensor replacement is very DIY'able. I'll post a pic of the page entry when I'm at a computer. Basically just jack the car up, remove the plastic undercarriage splash guards, drain oil, remove sensor, replace new sensor O-ring and sensor, and that's it.

Oh, and a new sensor is only $70.

replacing oil level sensor isn't that difficult. Its mounted underside of the oil pan. It'll be good idea to do that job during oil change since replacement of oil level sensor requires oil be removed.
