I am driving my second E60 with MT. The 2008 SP 550i is a far more rewarding manual tranny to drive. I have not felt the need to remove any clutch delay valve like on my 545. The short shifter is a pleasure to shift with. Traffic Shmaffic... never bothered me. Live in Los Angeles and have only driven a manual for 30 years.
Does anybody know if the short shifter is available as a part for retrofit ? Is it one of those on BMW's accessories catalog ?

Okay, today I test drove the car with SAT. A Carbon Black one with everything, etc.. And right afterwards, the only MT they still have on the lot; the one I drove earlier.

Well.... uh, it's an auto. It's a really good auto. But, eh, it's still an auto. I dunno, I just like the idea of sticking it in the gear I want and not having to decide if I want to drive in auto, sport auto, manual sport manual, auto sport manual, etc.. My little pea brain gets way too confused for those sorta choices.

Don't get me wrong it's a great auto or auto manual or auto sport manual or sport auto or.... it is pretty impressive. But different strokes for different folks even if the strokes are on the steering wheel.

I just don't sit in commuter's traffic chewing on a bagel dribbling my latte on my chin while listening to the world is coming to an end newscasts anymore. Even if I did, I'd probably still drive a MT. Which was why my latte was always on my chin.

After trying the SAT, I took the MT out again and liked it. A lot.

So, I think that settles it. And maybe I don't really need that temperamental 1967 Italian job after all. I might be happy with this thing. But of course there are those new MY09 997s coming to the dealer's lots soon. Dr. Lev, what yo Momma look like? You could be right....
Good luck with your choice -- the car is amazing regardless of the transmission.

I'm glad you got to try both -- now you know what's best for you. I do need to mention that my pea-brain (maybe we're long lost brothers as well?) adjusted to the "confusion" of choices in a matter of days. Now, I shift into manual sport mode with as much thought as it takes to buckle my seat belt...

Well gee, DrLev99, do you have a revolving door on your garage? At least get it to its first fill-up before trading.

Twistie, good choice either way.

I had my first fill-up two days ago. So, it's ready to go now. I'm like that guy in that comercial who buys the painting at auction and then immediately says he'd like sell it. My left ankle is sore.

I'd consider it Doc, but the people across the street have an AW 7er, the guy next door has an AW M3 and there are two AW 3ers usually parked on the street in front of me. With my addled brain, I'll forget where I parked it and, well, yeah...... anyway, thanks.

I really need a color I can find in the parking decks. That leaves out any shade of gray or black or white.

And I guess I gotta get to the gym and start pumping some leg iron

I bet not nearly as much as Carbon Black with a payment probably lower than anybody on here is paying!

it's not a kit per se, but a search will pull up the part #. I did it in <30 mins without raising the car up, but I've done it many times.
I don't know if the same short shift lever for the V8s will have the same shortening effect on the 6 cyl cars.

I wouldn't bet on it, unless you threw down $5K at signing for cap reduction.
