My Ride: 2009 E60 530i
Default

Hi all,

Just purchased my E60 530i a couple months ago. Got a great deal on it as the F10 was coming I've been a BMW enthusiast for quite some time, as I've owned an e30, e36, 3 e46s and now the e60, but I still can't understand my car. Well, according to the brochure I got when I was shopping for the car, the engine output is 258 hp and 300 Nm. I understand this kind of power comes from the N52B30 engine. But then, my car is an MY2009, and it has BMW's new steptronic transmission (not the older model), and I think it's a 7-speed automatic (I haven't really used the step). According to wikipedia and several other sources, the N52B30 in the 530i was replaced by the N53B30 in 2007, and that engine produces 272 hp. Well, BMW's new steptronic didn't arrive until 2007. Now it got me really confused. It's not that I'm not happy with the performance. In fact, I am. It's just I want to buy some stuff for the car (especially the BMS powerbox), and it's confusing if I don't know the exact engine code. Can anyone help me? Oh and for the record, I live in Indonesia. Is it possible that BMW Indonesia continued using the N52B30 engine but fitted the car with BMW's new steptronic transmission?

Thanks

Welcome aboard. You can key in your VIN number to www.realoem.com . Thus will get back your Engine's and others info.

Also the 272hp motor was a N53,not a N52XXX derivative I thought. May want to check the vin and the window sticker if you have one. Steptronic is the standard Auto box, while the S.A.T. became available as an option on the LCI cars. It was still a 6 sp, but had the sport mode button on the center console , and usually had paddle shifters, but not always.

Yeah I just checked. My car is 6-speed step, but the newer version of step (the joystick version, as we call it here). I thought this gearbox doesn't come with the N52B30, but I might be wrong. My car doesn't come with paddle shifter and there's no sport mode button. Changing to sport mode is by moving the shifter to the left, just like the older steptronic. My car is an LCI. It's just weird to think that BMW fitted my car, which is an MY2009, with an engine from their 2004-2007 530i (European application) and not the engine other 2009 530is in different countries use.

Oh btw, realoem returned my search as "error: VIN not found" lol. I guess it's because I'm in Indonesia. I guess I'd just have to remove the engine cover and check the code on the engine...

Nevermind. I browsed through realoem, and found out that my engine is actually N52N. I don't know what the "N" at the end stands for, but I guess my engine is a derivative of N52, which is the older engine.

Thanks for everybody's help.

Yup, because you are Indonesia you'll find a lot of the "standard" equipment changes we all talk about will be different in your market. Even in Canada we get slightly different packages from year to year from the US. As for your auto transmission, because you have the LCI "joystick" shifter you have the ability to change over to the S.A.T. shifter and functionality which will add the "sport" button in addition to moving the lever to the left for a additional sport functionality. Check out the threads over in the mods section for more info... some people just added the new shifter and ECU, while I added that plus the paddle-shifters.

Whoa I just saw your post on the retrofit. It's amazing! The SAT shifter looks 100x better than the standard step one. I guess I might do it after my warranty expires. I'm a wuss when it comes to transmission lol. I bookmarked your thread for future reference!
