I drive a 2005 530i. Last week, while driving on the freeway, my car just died. I was going about 60mph and luckily there was no one behind me. After manuvering to the side, I tried to start the car but nothing happen. A kind motorist jump started my car and off I went to my mechanic. He tested the battery and alternator charge rate. Everything was fine but I insisted on changing a new battery and he did it. Two days later, the same thing happened. This time he took out the new battey and put in the old one and the car started just fine. Anybody have the same experience? Went to the service centre and they found nothing wrong.

That sounds like something you'd want to go straight into BMW to have looked at. Hope you get it sorted out soon.

Try checking the O2 sensor. That went on me twice in my e46 within a 1 year period. Caused engine to die on me as well.

The problem is not that the car died its that you can't start (no cranking) after it dies. The battery is ok because if you wait about 1/2 hour it will start.

Think it could be related to a software glitch?

That is very scary. I know that BMW dealers are rubbish when it comes to troubleshooting. I would suggest you open up a case with BMW corporate on this.

It was bad gas when it happened to me. Diesel fuel remnants mixed with gas at the pump. Good luck.
