My 530 E60 died on the road also while I was on Vacation 500 miles from home. We picked it up from the Performance Center in SC late May. It was only 6 week old. It took the dealer 8 days to repair the car. It took 2-3 day to get the CAS unit. After the part was received, the parts department would not release the part to the technician without a copy of my drivers license and registration by that time we were 240 miles from the dealer. I was so upset. On the fifth day the software loader would abort. The DME unit was not responding and again ordered. After 8 days at the dealer it would be very diffucult to recommend the car to anyone. BMW customer relations was also contacted. Lucky for BMW when we got home the JD Powers survey was sitting in my mail box.
I think it is the rev timing and gear box issue. Apparently, this problem is perculiar to 520 at between 40 to 60 km/h and rev between 1.5 to 2k rpm. My dealer told me BMW Germany investigating this problem and so far, nothing heard about the solution. I had intermittant engine jerks (like engine going to fail but did not) and this seemed to have been fixed with software upgrade to V12 and upping the idle engine rev from around 600 rpm to 800 rpm. Upping the rev also stop the car from sliding backwards on a steep slope.

Hey Kiasu, I've also experienced that slight engine jerk at 1.5k-2k rpm. The needle was moderating up & down a 100rpm and the car felt hesistant. I have the software V12 upgrade as well but my idle revs are still set at 600rpm.

Same problem here with my 520. I find that turning the AC off at start up helps. Havent upgraded any software yet. But I suspect tuning the idle rev upward is the key to this problem.
