My 545i has 45K miles on it. I took it to the dealer over two weeks ago and recieved a loaner 328i. My complaints were:
1. Replace sunroof seals because of the excessive noise when the shade is open. (Warranty)
2. Wheel alignment ($250 because of active steering)
3. Transmission hunts for gears even when driving at a constant speed on a flat highway. It does it mostly in DS mode but I've felt the tranny keep changing gears when I am driving steady at normal D mode as well.
Well, the dealer took care of the first two in the first couple of days. As for #3, the service manager said that there is an internal transmission problem and that my tranny has to be replaced. He said that it will be a week because they have to order the part.
I was glad that this happened while the car is still under warranty. So I waited 5 days and called to get an update. (I was really beginning to miss my V8. The 328i was a nice car but there is no comparison!). Anyway, the service manager said that they were trying to resolve the problem by updating the software and think that this will solve the transmission problem! He said the software update keeps failing and they have to try again.
A few days later I called for an update and he said that the software update did not fix it and it really needs a new transmission and they ordered one!
I called the guy yesterday to get an update and he did not return by voice mail as of today.
I really miss my car and hope that these guys know what they are doing!
I just felt a little better sharing this with you guys!

Oh man that sucks... very understandable... I wouldnt be a happy camper if they took that long... but like you said.. glad you found it before warranty was out. I would go ask if they have another E60 for you to drive or even a 335 to compensate.

The service manager finally called me back and said that the transmission is in but my service tech is out sick today. He said that he'll have it ready tomorrow evening. We'll see about that!

Update: Finally got the car back over the weekend. They put in a new transmission. It drives great and the gear hunting is gone!
I do hear some wiered noises coming from the back wheels though. I need to investigate...
I am also pleased that they updated the Progman to version 25. So far I like it so much more. The new colors are nicer and I like the feature where it remembers the last screen you were in when the car starts. Also my CD problem is gone. The CD remembers the last mp3 song that was playing when the mute button is pushed.
I am happy to get my e60 back!
